ATM & Debit Cards - Security User Tips

Electronic banking at ATMs is a fast, convenient way to withdraw cash, make deposits, check account balances, transfer funds and more. If you use ATMs, it is in your best interest to make security a priority.

  • Choose a well-lit, well-placed ATM where you feel comfortable
  • Have your card ready beforehand. Avoid opening your purse, bag or wallet while waiting in line for the ATM
  • Do not use an ATM if it appears to have any attachments to the card slot or keypad. Check for unusual instructions on the display screen and for suspicious blank screens. Never force your card into the card slot. If you suspect that the ATM has been interfered with, proceed to another ATM and inform the bank
  • Avoid ATMs that have messages or signs fixed to them indicating that the directions have been changed, especially if posted over the card reader
  • Do not let a stranger enter with you when using an ATM that requires your card to open a lobby or vestibule door
  • Keep car doors locked, windows up, and engine running at all times when waiting in line at a drive-up ATM
  • Be alert when standing in line at an ATM. Check that other individuals keep an acceptable distance and do not watch you enter your PIN
  • Do not allow anyone to distract you while at an ATM. Be very cautious when strangers offer to help you, even if your card is stuck or you are experiencing difficulty with the transaction
  • Stand close to the ATM and shield the keypad with your hand when keying in your PIN. Do not key in your PIN until prompted by the ATM
  • Press the Cancel key, withdraw your card and proceed to another ATM if you feel the ATM is not working properly. Report the matter to your financial institution
  • Keep your ATM receipts so that you can compare them to your monthly statement. Do not leave receipts at the ATM machine - they may contain confidential account information
  • Promptly call the financial institution and/or police if your card gets jammed, retained, lost, or you are interfered with at an ATM
  • Keep your "secret code" a secret. Do not disclose your PIN to anyone, whether to a family member, bank staff, or police. If you think your PIN may have been compromised, immediately notify your financial institution.
  • Be alert to what is happening to your card. For example, do not let a restaurant waiter take your card away to settle the account. While cashier's process your card, make sure they do not swipe it through two different devices
  • Regularly check your account balance and bank statements and report any discrepancies to your financial institution immediately
  • Never give your credit card number over the phone or Internet, unless you are dealing with a reputable company, or you have initiated the call yourself, or you are 100% certain of the caller's identity and employer

If your ATM or Debit Card is lost or stolen, promptly notify NJM Bank toll-free at
